There is nothing like an early morning photo shoot or a late evening walk to set up or round out a ripper summer’s day on the Great Ocean Road. The greatest reward for bunking down close to Port Campbell National Park is the luxury of visiting the iconic sites at the times of day when the light is at its best and the trails and lookouts are at their quietest.

That’s right! No bull! With a little local knowledge you can still put first footprints  on a beach and find your own space even during the height of summer.

The bulk of day visitation to Port Campbell National Park at this time of year occurs between 11am and 6pm when the tour buses and day traffic arrive from Melbourne. Ironically, this is the time of the day when the light for photography and viewing is at its flattest.

If you’re staying close then that’s no drama. You could plan to forage your way around the 12 Apostles Food Artisan Trail during this time and load up a picnic hamper for a sunset to remember? Or you could take a leaf out of the book (or paws) of some of our local wildlife and do like a kangaroo. Take a nap during the middle of the day and get active at dusk and dawn. Seriously! When was the last time you treated yourself to an afternoon nap?

Plan to make no plans! Pick up a book; find a quiet spot on a beach (we’ll show you where) switch off the phone and let the sounds of the sea and a soft summer breeze soothe you into decadent afternoon slumber. Eat when you’re hungry, sleep when you’re tired and tap into the relaxed easy sway of our coastal lifestyle.

Go on hop to it! It would be Kangarude not to!

Best wishes for summer and the festive season, take care on the roads, slow down, unwind, recharge and be sure to call in to say hello. We are here with all the local tips and tricks to help you create the sweetest summer memories! – From all the staff at Port Campbell Visitor Information Centre.
