Great Ocean Road Safety12 apostles Coast and Hinterland Victoria Australia1

The Great Ocean Road is long and although the winding bends that hug the coastline make for great holiday photos, please be considerate and respectful towards all road users. You will find that the Great Ocean Road takes longer than it looks on a map and is best enjoyed over 2 or more days, this way you can enjoy all the top spots during the quieter times. You will encounter all vehicles from the humble family car to roaring motorbikes, motorhomes and caravans, cyclists, runners and even hikers. Our local wildlife takes to the roads quite often too so, with all these distractions and not to mention the stand out scenery, please read carefully and have a safe and memorable journey.

  • In Australia we drive on the left hand side of the road, keep in mind that as the driver, you should be closest to the centre road line.
  • Plan Ahead for a safe and enjoyable trip!
  • Always wear your seat belt and make sure your children are wearing a child restraint.
  • Please use the Slow Vehicle Turnouts, as passing opportunities are limited. Slow Vehicle Turnouts are the safe option for slower vehicles to allow vehicles behind them to pass them.
  • Please observe Road Safety Signs and Speed Signs.
  • Do not overtake across solid line markings.

  • Take care on dirt roads
  • Park safely with your vehicle completely off the road before using maps or navigation devices
  • Slow down and take your time on the Great Ocean Road, stop for powernaps. Did you know that 17 hours without sleep is like having a blood Alcohol Level of 0.5%, which is considered unsafe for driving.
  • Always find a safe place to pull over, never stop suddenly to observe wildlife.
  • Always indicate when turning.
  • The faster you drive, the more distance you'll need to brake and stop.
  • When parking in towns, you must park in the same direction as the traffic, parking in the wrong direction may result in a fine.
  • Never Drink and Drive.
  • Please take all rubbish home with you.
